District 2 City Councilwoman Felicia Williams and former Pasadena Police Lt. Phulante Riddle have been garnering attention for their efforts to run for the California State Assembly seat currently held by Chris Holden in 2024. In accordance with state Assembly policy Williams and Riddle recently opened exploratory committees.
Felecia Williams was elected to the District 2 City Council in November 2020, and is now serving as Vice Mayor. Phulante has a long history of public service, having served on the Pasadena Police Department for over 25 years before her retirement. She is also an active member of several local civic organizations and has advocated for numerous causes related to education, economic opportunity and public safety. If either Phulante or Felecia is successful in their bid for the Assembly seat, it would mark a significant milestone in California politics and be a major step forward for women of color in the state. Chris Holden’s tenure ends in 2024, and his replacement will shape policy decisions on issues both locally and statewide. It will be interesting to see how this race develops over the next few years.
