Free July Events Hosted by Pasadena Senior CenterThe Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St., will present free events and activities in July for everyone 50 and older.
Members and nonmembers are welcome to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted. Residency in Pasadena is not required. Some events are presented via Zoom, others are onsite at the Pasadena Senior Center and a few are hybrid via Zoom as well as onsite. Everyone who registers for Zoom events receives an email link for joining each activity online. Most Zoom events are recorded and televised on the Pasadena Senior Center YouTube channel. COVID protocols are observed for all onsite events at the center. All instructors and presenters are required to meet minimum COVID protocols. Movie Matinees – Fridays, July 1 to 29, at 1 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Each member who registers may bring one nonmember guest. • July 1: "Grease" (1978, PG) starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fall in love over the summer but Danny is not exactly truthful with Sandy about his background – until autumn when they discover they now go to the same high school. • July 8: “Independence Day” (1996, PG-13) starring Will Smith and Bill Pullman. Aliens are coming to invade and destroy Earth in a battle of superior technology vs. mankind’s best weapon: the will to survive. • July 15: “The Sandlot” (1993 PG) starring Tom Guiry and Mike Vitar. In the summer of 1962, a new kid in town is taken under the wing of a young baseball prodigy and rowdy team, resulting in many adventures. • July 22: “A League of Their Own” (1992, PG) starring Tom Hanks and Geena Davis. Two sisters join the female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed despite their own growing rivalry. • July 29: “Top Gun” (1986, PG) starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. As students at the Naval Fighter Weapons School compete to be the best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom. Learn about environmental factors such as uneven pavement and wet or slippery floors as well as health conditions that can affect balance and put you at greater risk for falling, plus how to improve balance and surroundings to reduce the possibility of falling. Grief and Loss: Beyond Blue – Tuesdays through July 12 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Grief is a natural response to loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. This support group is designed for anyone 50 and older who has lost a close friend or loved one. It is helpful to allow yourself to grieve your way, share your grief with others and let them support you through the process. The group is facilitated by Denise Traboulsi MSW and Dr. Adria Navarro, resource specialists at the USC-VHH Community Resource Center for Aging. Diabetes Empowerment and Education – Thursdays, July 14 to Aug. 18, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. In a relaxed and supportive environment, share your experiences with others living with diabetes and learn how to cope with this difficult illness. This support group is a vital part of many people's diabetes management and can have a significant, positive impact on their lives. Music on the Patio: Bob and Don – Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Join pianist Bob Lipson and singer Don Snyder for an afternoon of music on the spacious patio featuring everybody's favorite show tunes and standards. Sing along, kick up your heels and dance or simply tap your toes to the rhythm of the music. Health Fair and Produce Distribution – Friday, July 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. onsite at Pasadena Senior Center. Services will include blood pressure and glucose testing, hearing tests, updates in Medicare health plans, resources and more. Preassembled bags of fresh, nutritious vegetables will be distributed on the patio while supplies last courtesy of Order of Malta Mobile Ministries. One bag per person. Everyone is encouraged to bring a personal pull-behind cart to transport the produce. Registration is not required; proof of COVID vaccination will be required. Cultural Thursday: Plucking a Rose Under the Crescent Moon – Thursday, July 28, at 2 p.m. via Zoom. Dr. Janet Fahey, a civil and sanitation engineer, environmental consultant and lifetime member of the Jane Austen Society of North America, will lead an intriguing and lighthearted presentation about the history of sanitation in India and Rome from ancient times until Jane Austen’s lifetime and beyond. (Note: In Jane Austen’s time, “plucking a rose” was a euphemism for meandering to the garden outhouse.) Save the Dates: Summer Concert Series – Mondays, Aug. 8 to Sept. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Summer concerts are coming back after a two-year, COVID-related hiatus! Beat the heat on the spacious, tree-shaded patio for five Monday concerts featuring several different genres. In addition to online classes, onsite events and other activities, members and nonmembers of the Pasadena Senior Center are encouraged to visit the website regularly for a monthly magazine, free food delivery for older adults in need, COVID updates specifically for older adults and more. The center is an independent, donor-supported nonprofit organization that has served older adults for more than 60 years. During the pandemic, doors are open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for social services as well as the library, Sy Graff Fitness Center, computer lab and limited occupancy for events. Rooms are sanitized after each use. In accordance with Pasadena Public Health Department guidelines, proof of COVID vaccination is required for everyone who uses the fitness center or attends onsite activities indoors.
