I couldn’t believe it when Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., compared the insurrection at the Capitol to the White House when he said it was just guys doing a regular tour of the Capitol. I know I am getting old but that didn’t look like a tour to me. It looked more like guys rioting and waving flags that support Trump and Make America Great Again. They were in trump uniforms and carrying Confederate flags and Make America Great Again flags, and they were rioting and trying to tell the world that the unruly guys were from Black Lives Matter and Antifa (whoever that is).
I believe we need to fight a two-sided fight; one, fighting against discrimination, and another, fighting to get our economic house in order. This was the remedy the Japanese decided after World War II. They built cars and computers and improved their technology, while quietly fighting the hatred. Blacks experience discrimination from Republicans through violence and death against black men, historically, by working to keep blacks from voting. Their current hateful campaign is to strip us from our voting rights while calling it. “making it easier to vote”. We aren’t stupid. We know what they’re doing. These same states that don’t want us to vote are working to cut out a portion of unemployment benefits. These Republicans are saying getting an extra $300 per month makes us not want to work. It’s like when the Bus Boycott happened in Birmingham, Alabama during the 60s, the good white folks thought blacks would rather walk than work. After 400 plus years of being in this country together with white folks, they still don’t understand black folks. We’re not hard to understand. Blacks folks want the same thing white folks want; peace, opportunity, and equality. That’s all. The only thing missing on January 6, 2021, was the Klan uniforms. The Republican rioters called themselves peaceful protestors. I say they were Klansmen and women praying to kiss Trumps’ rump. I keep reflecting on the campaign of Barack Obama and how they treated Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright, a man that black folks love. He wasn’t violent and he interpreted the word of God in a way that white folks didn’t like, so they made it illegal for blacks to read the bible. Now they want to stop us from voting because we are not going to vote the way they want us to. The legislation that tells State Legislators how to write model legislation was created by the Heritage Foundation. They wrote the Voter Suppression Bill law and made it so the Republican Legislators could sign it and stop black and brown people from voting. You can’t tell me this is about equality and not about discrimination and voter suppression. It is clearly the second coming of Jim Crow. That’s why they don’t want Democrats and blacks to see the bill signed, even jailing one for trying to get in to observe the signing. As a lawyer for nearly forty years, I believe that this so-called Privacy Act will be overturned by the courts. In the meantime, we should all seek to educate ourselves of their tactics and fight to get around them. Don’t sit and wait on others to rescue you. Register to vote. Study the measures. Research the candidates. Vote in every election. Let’s encourage one another and share our knowledge with each other. We must lift up the race as a group! |
