ButterflyIan Fehring of Boy Scout Troop 103 in Arcadia, CA and Jeff Chapman, Teacher Naturalist at the Audubon Center at Debs Park announced that the 1st Annual Butterfly Census in Debs Park will be conducted on Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 9:00am - 4:00 pm at the Audubon Center, which is located at 4700 North Griffin Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90031. Beginners and experts alike are invited to participate in the count, walk the trails, picnic in the park and bring their children for arts and crafts events and Butterfly Storytime, which will be held at 10 am, 12 noon and 2 pm. "We hope that by inviting the public to this interesting event at the park, they will return for other programs and recreational activities" Fehring said. Admission to the park and the Butterfly census is free to all.

The Audubon Center at Debs Park opened in 2003 and is a cutting-edge environmental education center providing ecological monitoring within the nearly 300-acre city park, located on the border of Highland Park and Montecito Heights between Dodger Stadium and South Pasadena. This Butterfly Census will provide a baseline for future counts as part of the Center's long-range plan to create and measure the habitat that attracts indigenous wildlife back to the area.
