I am a junior at John Muir High School. At school, teachers and counselors were announcing that the ROP program was going to have applications for summer jobs. I was very excited because I felt that it would be a good opportunity for me to work and get money for my school materials, and to learn. I went to the ROP office many times to apply, but each time I went it would be closed. After waiting for many days I finally got to speak to someone at the office, and they told me that they were only giving applications to people that live in Pasadena. I live in Altadena, and I think it is ridiculous that students that live in Altadena do not have the opportunity to work with the ROP/Rose Program. Altadena students should be offered the same opportunities that Pasadena students are offered because we are all part of the same school district. I was very sad when they told me I couldn't apply because I really need a job. I don't live with my parents because they live in another country, and I need the money so that I can support myself, buy whatever I need for school, and save up to some day go visit my parents. By not being given the opportunity, it feels like those of us that live in Altadena are being separated and not given the same opportunities than other students. I think it is important for all students that are part of the Pasadena school district to have the opportunity to work with the ROP/Rose Program, even if they live in Altadena, because it will get students to avoid getting into trouble.
