On June 18, 2010 the Thirty Seven diverse hard-working graduates of the Pasadena/Altadena Apprenticeship Preparation Program (inspired by Councilmember Jacque Robinson's 2020 Initiative), received their Certificate after completing a 240 hour program. This program was created and is operated by the Flintridge Center under the auspices of Jaylene Moseley and directed by Brian Biery, Director of Community Organizing.
Training is provided by Pasadena City College Community Education Center under the auspices of Rick Hodge, Division Dean and two amazing instructors Bud Darling and Dave Eggleston. Case managers Alina Sgattoni and Max Ruiz provided linkages to community resources, additional career ready skills and one-on-one support.
One major component of the program is the involvement, dedication and commitment of a wide range of collaborating unions who go above and beyond duty to provide mentorship, workshops, class presentation and on-site visits to their training facilities. According to Brian Biery, one of the key components of the program is the relationships that participants develop with each other which were underscored by graduate Dawn Perryman who was described by her teacher as a strong positive influence and created a "Potluck for Bonding event."The guest speaker Jane Templeton, is a 34 year veteran of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), initially worked as a construction electrician and presently serves as the Outreach Director of the Electrical Training Institute. Jane congratulated them for their accomplishments and cautioned that they face a tough labor market, but help is on the way. Councilmember Jacque Robinson congratulated the graduates and shared the genesis of the apprenticeship program and that she is the daughter of a cement mason.
The program graduated over 100 people over a two-year period. Some of the attributes of the Apprenticeship Program is that graduates got training for a career instead of a job, are blossoming and enjoyed healthy doses of camaraderie and networking.
