NBJC Encourages Congress to Pass ENDA Immediately

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) released the following statement today following participation in a press conference earlier today demanding immediate action in both the House and Senate on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a federal bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The press conference was part of a series of nationwide actions this week calling for a vote on ENDA.

Fairness is a basic American value. Everyone wants to go to work, feel safe, and be productive - including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Many are raising families. Imagine the stress of raising a family and always having to walk on egg shells at work for fear that you will be fired because someone is uncomfortable with your race, sexual orientation or gender identity - characteristics over which you have no control.

Discrimination is discrimination no matter how you slice it. Preventing LGBT people from making an honest living because of who they are is wrong. Our country will be stronger when all American workers have access to the legal protections that ENDA provides. Discrimination divides us and weakens our communities, and distract us from the issues that really hurt us—issues of economic justice, unemployment, homelessness, and poverty.

We call upon Members of Congress to pass the Employee Non-Discrimination Act immediately so that we can get down to the real business of healing and strengthening our communities.

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. NBJC's mission is to eradicate racism and homophobia.
