CHAP Fundraising Event to Benefit Low-Income Patients

The gala, on May 1 at the Shakespeare Club in Pasadena, will help to provide health care for low- income and uninsured community residents.

Community Health Alliance of Pasadena (CHAP) will hold its annual fundraising event at Pasadena's historic Shakespeare Club on May 1, 2009, located at 171 S. Grand Avenue, Pasadena, California, 91105, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year's event will be a festive cabaret that will culminate with the presentation of the CHAP Community Health Action Awards to Mother Love, Supervisor Michael Antonovich and KCET's Val Zavala.

CHAP is a nonprofit community health center providing primary medical and dental care services for the many low-income and uninsured residents of greater Pasadena. In 2008, CHAP provided care to 6,863 individual patients, including 693 children and 6,170 adults for a total of 21,904 medical and dental visits.

An estimated 25% of Pasadena's residents lack health insurance. CHAP was founded in 1998 to reduce the demand on local emergency rooms for non-urgent conditions, and to address the health disparities experienced by Pasadena's low-income residents. CHAP is open to all children and adults who experienced barriers to care. More than 80% of CHAP's patients live below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level. CHAP believes that all residents should have the opportunity to have access to high quality, affordable health care. CHAP helps provide that access by providing services, such as pre-natal care, immunizations, dental care, chronic disease management, cancer screening and many more vital, life sustaining services.

The current economic downturn has increased demand for affordable health care services. This event hopes to raise operating funds in addition to bringing attention to its important mission-to maintain a community-based, public and private health alliance, providing quality health care to in an environment of care for the residents of the Pasadena and surrounding communities.
