Paid Interships in the Arts Now Available

Supervisor Don Knabe is announced the availability of dozens of paid internships across the Fourth District through the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program. The positions are for 10 weeks and pay $350 per week.

To support the internships, Los Angeles County has given grants totaling $500,000 to 95 performing, literary, media and municipal arts organizations over the past 10 years. More than 1100 college students have participated in the program since its inception in the summer of 2000.

Descriptions and contacts for the 125 internship positions are posted on the Los Angeles County Arts Commission's web site. Go to www.lacountyarts.org, click on Internships, then 2009 Internship Positions. Interested college students should apply directly to the organization offering the internship. General information on the internship program is also available on the web site.

Eligibility requirements for the internships have been expanded in 2009. Graduating seniors who complete their undergraduate degrees by September 1, 2009 are eligible, as well as undergraduates. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2009 and be currently enrolled (full-time) in a community college or a four-year university. Applicants must be a resident in and/or attending school in Los Angeles County.

Examples of County internship experiences include -

The Multidisciplinary Arts Intern at Angels Gate Cultural Center will help Angels Gate bring more performing arts to its underserved Harbor area community. The intern will provide support to Angels Gate Cultural Center's Executive Director as he plans and programs the 2009-2010 performing arts season.

The Arts Learning Intern at the Arts Council for Long Beach will be responsible for developing a completed arts and cultural education directory. The intern will gather submissions, gather materials and images and provide input and direction for final print and web production.

The Operations/Education Intern at the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra will assist with planning and preparation for the 2009-2010 season of Artistic, Production and Education activities during the summer months.
