Delegates to the General Assembly of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) voted tonight to move the 2010 Holy Convocation to another major city. This is an historic moment in the history of the Church of God in Christ because the Holy Convocation has been held in Memphis (international headquarters for COGIC) for 102 years.
The leadership of the Church decided to present the option of moving the Holy Convocation after years of making an attempt to negotiate better arrangements for the members of the denomination. Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake said: "Memphis is our home. We love this city, but we have been offered a better package that is more cost-effective for the membership of our church."
Several factors make the other city's offer attractive, such as significantly discounted hotel rates, convention facilities in close proximity to the hotels and large enough to house various convocation activities in one facility rather than multiple buildings.
The Holy Convocation has an average attendance of 50,000 delegates each year with an estimated economic impact of more than $35 million dollars to the Memphis area economy.
The Church of God in Christ is the fourth-largest Protestant religious denomination in the United States with an estimated membership of more than 6.5 million. World Headquarters are located at 930 Mason Street in Memphis, TN.
