We all know that sacrifice is the order of the day for most of us when it comes to committing to an exercise routine, and when you think about it, the sacrifice (time, energy, money) can be more throbbing for us than the discomfort of the physical workout. With this writing, we'll take a look at some instruction from the word of God that may help us to overcome this challenge.
First let's identify the challenge; the root obstacle to any challenge is the fear factor - Am I strong enough, prepared and or equipped to take on this challenge? We either deal with it or we don't - there's no two ways about it. Fear can be a motivating force or an immovable object. How we choose to respond to it determines our outcome.
God's instruction for overcoming fear in this area is found in Proverbs 29:25. It states that "The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever leans on, trusts in, and puts his confidence in the Lord is safe and set on high." (Amplified Bible) Now by way of application, let us understand this; that fear is no more than a stirring of our emotions as we expose ourselves to danger, evil or pain. Victory over fear is ours when we develop the habit of trusting God's provision and design within us to deal with it.
You and I know that the devil does not want any of us to be fit and healthy. His aim is to use any gizmo at his disposal to divert us from being whole and well - fit for the work of the kingdom. Our response and responsibility to his challenge is to divert our focus from the fear we may feel to the confidence and trust we believe we have in Jesus! Who among us has the ability to focus fully upon two opposing elements at the same time? I can't, and I don't know anyone who can. Saints I submit to you that this is the case for a very purposeful and positive reason - God's design for mankind is that whatever we give our attention to, the spirit of that thing then comes to live and operate on the inside of us.
In closing, I encourage you to remember that man's fear (for fitness or any other edifying goal or process) snares him. But in facing the fear, if we purpose to turn our focus toward the Lord, we are always safe and equipped and energized with the "Sacrificial Motivation" we need to succeed!
