A Matter of Spiritual Gifts . . .

Part Two:  The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

Black news from Pasadena - Religion - Living too close to Sodom and GomorrahI Corinthian 12:1-11 states, "Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. Each and every believer has received the eternal indwelling gifts of the Holy Spirit for the purpose of making the body complete.

It enables us to edify, strengthen, feed, exhort, empower and encourage the Church. These gifts are purposed to exalt the risen Christ and be a witness to God's power. Luke 4:1 states, "Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness . . .".  Following His temptation Luke 4:14 states, "Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit . . .".

Today there seems to be a lack of clarity concerning this subject. Without Him, ministry is ineffective, powerless, and unproductive. The Christian walk is devoid of the governance of the Holy Spirit's ministry and a life that was birthed by divine inspiration is sustained by human ingenuity and effort. We live a life on the fence, no conviction, no holiness, no power, no inspiration, no sanctification and want to see just how close we can pitch our tents to Sodom and Gomorrah. Early Christians were instructed not to do anything until they received the Holy Spirit.

If you are in ministry, operating in the gifts of the Holy Spirit is not optional. Jesus did not work one miracle until He was empowered. Luke 3:21, "The Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove...then Jesus began His ministry." The Apostle Paul, the predominant writer of the New Testament was filled with the Holy Spirit after Ananias laid hands on him in Acts 9:17. Jesus speaking to his disciples on the threshold of Pentecost and the birthing of the New Testament Church declared in John 20:21-22, ". . . As the father has sent me I also send you and when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "receive the Holy Spirit."
