More than two hundred young African American males gathered at Pasadena City College together to share knowledge at the sixth annual Young African American Males Conference on Saturday, September 15, 2012. The annual conference brought together some of the area's best and brightest minds in African American males to share their achievements and experience with the younger males as they seek their own success in life.

Appropriately titled, "Success By Choice", the conference conducted workshops and seminars on a variety of subjects including Financial Aid, How to Succeed in High School, Testing Skills, Transferring Into and Out of College, Know Your Rights When Stopped by the Police, Is College Right for Me, and What to Expect the First Day of College.

A speech by keynote speaker, Dr. George McKenna, served to kick off and set the tone of the event. McKenna, a nationally known educator, encouraged and inspired the young men with words of wisdom and caution as they enter the real world.

Workshop presenters included Pasadena City College Professor Anthony Smith, Justin Yuille, Delano Yarbrough, Jeff Hannibal, Lynell Wiggins, Professor Dr Paul Price and PCC Vice President Dr Robert Bell.

Workshop monitors included Keith Rogers, Morris Appling, Charles Johnson, Al Hackett, Dexter Bryant, Cameron Turner, Abshawn James, Edgar Lockette, Clydell Bryant, Rick Hamilton, Samuel Bingham, Chuck Pulliam, Clifford Franklin, Kurt Franklin, and myself (Joe Hopkins).

The conference served as encouragement to Young African American Males as they experienced Black males serving as role models in leadership positions in life.

Thanks went out to conference chairman, Albert Stephens, and the numerous sponsors who realize the importance of such events and donated their time, talents, and money to help make the event a success.
