On Saturday, September 22, 2012, the Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. sponsored the Fifth Annual Health Summit at the Jackie Robinson Community Center. Over 450 people came out in the heat to get FREE tests and screenings, health information, hear Pastor Lucious Smith speak, enjoy games and contests in Kidz Zone, and get their groove on with a variety of popular line dances. Feedback from people that attended the event included comments like, "Everything is good . . . it's like a comprehensive exam without the wait."; "I'm getting everything done, from the Rooty to the toothy."; and "I had the time to invest in myself today."
Those that came out and invested in themselves to 'Take Control of Their Health Destiny' learned their status in a lot of areas that impact the overall health of their heart, kidneys, eyes, teeth, breasts and more. Results from FREE screenings done during the day highlight how important it is to know your status. There were fi8ve people that the National Kidney Foundation referred on for emergency treatment, five people that wanted mammograms but needed to be referred on for more intense diagnostic mammograms, eleven people referred to an optometrist for further testing, two people referred on for further dental treatment and two people that The Sickle Cell Foundation referred on for medical treatment. By coming out and learning their status, these people now know their health situation and can start acting today to make changes to positively impact their health and live longer lives.
FREE Tests and screenings done during the day were 29 dental screenings, 158 blood pressure checks, 120 diabetes screenings, 113 body mass index analysis, 15 asthma screenings, 25 mammograms, 50 kidney disease screenings, 29 HIV tests, 69 eye tests and 18 sickle cell anemia screenings. There were also 54 flu shots given, ten people added to the National Bone Marrow Registry, and six people registered to vote. People that attended also received information on healthy eating, heart disease, cancer, acupuncture, mental health, financial health & services in the Pasadena community for youth and adults through the YWCA and Day One.
Pastor Lucious Smith from Friendship Baptist Church blessed the audience with the story of his cancer battle and the importance of being healthy from all aspects. He noted the need to take care of yourself spiritually, mentally and through a healthy lifestyle of exercise and eating right. The Health Summit had something for the whole family with Kidz Zone, double Dutch and line dancing. Overall, the day was an overwhelming success where many took control of their own health destiny, learned their status and benefited from all the FREE services and information.
