Banning Big Rig Trucks on the Angeles Crest Highway

Assemblyman Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge)While the tragedy that claimed the life of a Angel Posca and his 12 year-old-daughter, Angelina, still deeply affects all of us, I am very pleased to inform you that the Governor has signed Assembly Bill 1361 banning big rig trucks on the Angeles Crest Highway.

I am very proud to have received strong bi-partisan support so that this bill could go into law today and not have to wait until January as is the custom for new laws. If you're traveling through town today, you will see Caltrans installing permanent signage immediately. In addition to the commercial truck ban, Assembly Bill 1361 increases the fines for violators to $1,000. I'm told by the CHP that the fine will be an extremely effective deterrent. Since the accident, I've had many parents, neighbors and friends tell me where they or their loved ones were in relation to the time and place of the tragedy. My own daughters, Sofia and Bella, were in that intersection 20 minutes before the accident. It is my hope that we now can travel more safely in our quiet town. It's seems appropriate that Flintridge Books just reopened as this bill becomes law.

AB 1361 could not have become law without the participation and support of many committed members of our community. Gold Award Girl Scout Malia Mailes and my co- author, Senator Carol Liu, were also deeply committed to shepherding this bill through the process and re- enforcing the need for the truck ban. And finally to my staff, whose hard work and dedication moved AB 1361 through the state bureaucratic system in record pace. If you want to know specifics about the bill don't hesitate to give Michael in my office a call (916) 319-2044. Certainly, we all continue to send our prayers to the family of Angel and Angelina.
