PUSD Weekly Newsflash


Washington Middle School will transform into an application-only Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) magnet in 2013-2014, with admission granted to entering sixth-eighth grade students who have demonstrated an interest or aptitude in STEAM, meet academic requirements and whose parents/guardians commit to staying involved and completing campus service hours. Additional consideration will be provided for students who reside within the school's attendance zone. Prospective students are invited to attend the STEAM Family Night on Thursday, December 13 from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in the Washington Middle School cafeteria, located at 1505 N. Marengo Ave., Pasadena. Presenting hands-on projects and experiments will be STEAM magnet partners Caltech and their Classroom Connections program, Kidspace Children's Museum, the Art Center College of Design, the Armory Center for the Arts and the Pasadena Educational Foundation's robotics program.

The Pasadena Unified School District's (PUSD) Priority open enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year began Tuesday, December 4 and ends on December 18. Priority open enrollment is only for siblings of students already enrolled at a school of choice, children of current PUSD full time employees and Willard fifth grade students who wish to continue in the International Baccalaureate program at Blair Middle School. On December 5, PUSD's Chief of Facilities was placed on leave. Chief Finance Officer John Pappalardo will assume his duties until the matter is resolved. In addition, the contract with PUSD's Bond Manager has been suspended and four other contracts have been terminated. The firm of Vicenti, Lloyd and Stutzman has begun an independent, outside investigation into the matter. PUSD is working to make sure that the education of our students, the maintenance of our facilities and the construction of new centers of learning are impacted as little as possible so we can maintain and build upon the trust that has been developed with the PUSD community.

The musical talents of PUSD elementary, middle and high school students will be on display this holiday season as glee clubs, choirs, bands and orchestras perform a full schedule of winter concerts and performances throughout Altadena, Pasadena and Sierra Madre. The elementary school holiday program kicks off on Friday, December 7 with a holiday program at Franklin Elementary School in Altadena. On Tuesday, December 4, over 150 parents, guardians and students attended the Welcome Center's 3rd Annual Destination College: A Family Road Map presentation. Those in attendance received important information about A-G requirements, academic rigor, PUSD's Pathways, financial aid, writing their personal essay, tracking awards/community service, the role of parents and much more.

Daniel Webster Elementary School is in contention for a $50,000 Power a Bright Future grant from the Clorox Company for new and updated technology. The school with the most votes via text and/or online will win the grand prize. Anyone over the age of 13 can vote online and via text daily (two votes a day) until December 19. Madison Elementary School will be hosting a book fair from December 12-18, 2012. Madison and Scholastic Book Fairs are working to make sure every Madison student has a book to take home. If the school raises $1250, Scholastic Book Fairs will match the donation and every child will receive a $5 book voucher. Friday, December 14:  4 p.m.

Special musical guests SpongeBob and the Hi-Seas will ring in the holidays at the La Pintoresca annual tree lighting at La Pintoresca Branch Library and Park, 1355 N. Raymond Avenue (corner of Washington Blvd. and Raymond Avenue). Tom Kenny, the voice of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants and his band SpongeBob and the Hi-Seas will perform selections from their upcoming Christmas album. Santa Claus is expected to make a surprise visit so bring your camera for photos of your child with Santa! Children will have fun making seasonal crafts, singing carols, and enjoying refreshments beginning at 4 p.m. The annual Christmas tree lighting will follow at 5:30 p.m. Presented in partnership with Pasadena Human Services & Recreation Department, Pasadena Public Works Department, Pasadena LEARNs, and Armory Center for the Arts. December 26 - 30

It's going to be a winter wonderland at Kidspace Children Museum in Pasadena as 60 tons of snow is trucked in for the 5th Annual Snow Days winter celebration. Snow Days at Kidspace takes place from Wednesday, December 26 through Sunday, December 30, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 pm. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends.
