Maryvale to Offer New Tutoring Program in Duarte

In February 2013, the Maryvale Family Resource Center will begin providing FREE one-to-one English as a Second Language ("ESL") tutoring for caregivers (i.e. parents, grandparents, family members, etc.) of children being taught in English. The ESL Program focuses on the literacy needs of non-English speaking adult immigrants as well as people who want to improve their English language skills.

Community volunteers will be trained as tutors and teach on a one-on-one basis, providing the opportunity for the student to progress at a faster pace by giving personalized attention. The tutor and student must both commit to a minimum of 1-2 hours of ESL tutoring per week. The tutoring sessions will take place at a comfortable local setting in the students' community during a mutually convenient time for the tutor and student. In the future the ESL program will also assist in tutoring on Workplace Communication, GED preparation and U.S. Citizenship study.

Opened in February 2011, the Maryvale Family Resource & Early Education Center provides services to families and their children. Designed to collaborate with other community health, protection, and education agencies the Center provides out-patient and community based mental health services to children, youth and families.

Out-patient mental health services target children ages 0-21 and their families who receive MediCal funding. Our clinical staff provide individual, group and family therapy. Parent support groups and a variety of workshops are provided to Duarte and the surrounding communities. Community based services include those that occur in the home as well as various school settings. Our professional bi-lingual staff includes licensed and licensed-eligible social workers, marriage and family therapists and case managers.
