As part of this year's trip to Atlanta for the Trumpet Awards, last weekend, my wife and I also spent some time participating in the launching of a new organization called, IAAACT (pronounced, " I-ACT"). It is a pseudonym for the INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED AFRICAN AMERICAN CHRISTIAN THOUGHT. The organization is the vision of our son, Dr. Jamal Hopkins, who has spent the past ten years training and preparing for a career in the ministry, by earning a Bachelors at Howard university, a Masters at Fuller Theological Seminary, a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) at Manchester University in England, and as a Professor of Theology at various Theological Institutions including Atlanta's Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, and Crichton College (currently known as Victory University) in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the only African American expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls in the United States.
On Saturday, January 26, 2013 we attended the first IAACT organizational meeting in Atlanta. It was attended by Ministers, students and faculty of ITC and other Schools of Theology and well wishers who have been supportive of Dr. Jamal over the years, as he has progressed in his career. Many of them praised Dr. Jamal because of his knowledge, teaching style and the fact that he is the rare professor who prays before each class.
The IAAACT is a non-profit Think Tank on African American Christian thought. It has launched its Web Site and can be followed at www.iaaactweebly.com. That address is good for those who want to contact, contribute or assist the organization in any way.
I note that Jamal preached at Metropolitan Baptist Church, just after Christmas, and pointed out that the job for Christians is to stay obedient to the word of God and God will fight your battles. He noted that many who came to praise Jesus at his birth were plotting to slay him, at the same time. The same thing could happen to each of us. We may be praised one day and fired the next day by the same people. Jamal was promoted in February and terminated in July. Now the president who fired him is looking for a job. You can read between the lines to figure that out, except that by staying obedient to the Word of God, Jamal will be just fine.
