On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., hosted its 25th annual Fashionetta Scholarship and Salute to Mothers luncheon and fashion show at the Glendale Hilton. This fun-filled afternoon awarded nearly $10,000 in scholarships to graduating college-bound seniors from Pasadena area high schools and honored Mrs. Dawna Tai Whaley as the AKA 2013 Mother of the Year.
The scholarship presentation was impressive as the eight awardees took the stage while their accomplishments and future goals were shared with the audience. Mrs. Whaley was queen of the day as she walked the runway and graciously accepted her award.
The guests were entertained by emcee Rolanda Watts, Emmy-nominated journalist, talk show host, producer, actor, novelist and motivational speaker. DJ Sean P provided the music and Velvet Monkey Designs the fashion show.
The 2013 scholarship recipients included Maiya Sims and Justine Yarber, Muir High School; Miracle Williams, Monrovia High; Marissa Johnson, Marshall Fundamental High School; Kai Grayson, Westridge School; Chadd Cosse, Flintridge Preparatory School; Lauren Franklin, La Verne Lutheran High School; and Daniel Patterson, South Pasadena High School.
One of the scholarship awards was made possible through a generous donation from Simplicity Bank. Lisa Rauder-Cook, manager of the Pasadena Branch of Simplicity Bank and Linda Hunter from the Corporate Office awarded the Math/Technology Scholarship to Maiya Sims from John Muir High School.
