Featured Live Performances, Special Guests, and Unique Physics Demonstrations Helped Mark the Occasion
During the weekend of Friday, July 12 to Sunday, July 14, Kidspace Children's Museum celebrated the one year anniversary of the grand opening of The Robert & Mary Galvin Physics Forest, which was opened to the public on July 12, 2012. The three day celebration included feature live performances from children's performer, Riff Rockit, on Friday, July 12, The Wildlife Learning Center, on Saturday, July 13, as well as local dance ensemble, Kids of Rock Theatre, and Radio Disney on Sunday, July 14. Each day of the celebration highlighted a different aspect of physics with themed activities and demonstrations; Friday focused on the physics of heroic action, Saturday the physics of nature, and Sunday the physics of creativity.
Since opening last July, The Galvin Physics Forest has helped Kidspace Children's Museum reach newer and older audiences, and see record attendance with 2012 being the second most attended year since the Museum moved to Brookside Park in 2004. "Since opening last summer, The Galvin Physics Forest has welcomed over 240,000 guests to its interactive world of physics and delighted them with explorations of such topics as the conservation of energy, air pressure, and mechanical advantage. The Galvin Physics Forest was intended to engage children six years and older but has proven to also appeal to younger visitors as well as adults. It is extremely gratifying to witness the community response to this space over this past year and we're looking forward to opening more exciting exhibits beginning this Fall," said MaryAnn Viviano, Kidspace's Director of Business Operations.
The Galvin Physics Forest, which occupies 30,000 square feet of the Museum's 3.4 acres, features 13 interactive exhibits all specially created for Kidspace and the unique, outdoor setting that The Galvin Physics Forest is designed to be. Each exhibit demonstrates a fundamental principle of physics, providing guests with the opportunity to interact with those principles in a manner that is both educational and fun. In addition to the exhibits themselves, The Galvin Physics Forest has also led Kidspace to create additional physics programming for guests and school groups, as well as teacher training that focuses on STEM education methodology.
The Galvin Physics Forest was the first major addition to Kidspace to be funded by The Campaign for the Future of Kidspace, a capital campaign announced in May 2012, which was launched to build new exhibits, upgrade existing learning environments, improve guest amenities, and develop new curriculum and programs. The next phase of construction is on schedule to begin this September with a brand-new, interactive exhibit space, to be located in the Robert's Pavilion, open later this Fall.
Located on nearly three and a half acres in Pasadena, California, Kidspace Children's Museum has more than 40 hands-on exhibits, in addition to its outdoor spaces, programs, and activities that are designed to encourage a child's growth and development through exploration of the environment, investigation in science, and artistic expression. Kidspace is located at 480 N. Arroyo Blvd., in Brookside Park, Pasadena, California, adjacent to the Rose Bowl Stadium. Free parking is available in Rose Bowl Parking Lot I. Kidspace is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Kidspace is open seven days a week between Memorial and Labor Days). Admission for all adults and children one year and older is $10.00. Children under one year and members are free.
