AKA Health Summit 2013 Delivered FREE Services and Information to All

Black news from Pasadena - News - AKA Health Summit 2013On Saturday, September 28, 2013 many came out and took control of their health destiny. At least 50 people started the day by participating in the Walking 4 Mommy 5K Walk through northwest Pasadena. Others patiently waited until services were ready for them, and then took advantage of them. When all was said and done, over 450 people took advantage of the services and information available at Health Summit 2013.

Everything was FREE for all that attended. Through the course of the day, people received 138 Blood Pressure Checks, 199 Flu Shots, 78 Body Mass Index Checks, 124 Glucose (Diabetes) Screenings, 30 Dental Screenings, 24 Adult Eye Exams, 35 Children's Eye Exams, 35 HIV Tests, 36 Hearing Tests, 29 Breast Exams and 26 Mammograms.

Black news from Pasadena - News - annual Health Summit includes blood donation driveThere were 29 people that donated blood to the American Red Cross. Since one pint of blood saves three lives, this blood donation will impact 87 people.

Over 18 children stopped by the Wii Fit Station sponsored by the Pasadena Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, many got their questions answered on medicine interactions from Edwin's Pharmacy and others stopped by Pediatrician's Corner to get the results of their testing throughout the day explained to them.

Over 60 people visited Healthy Food, Healthy You Village where they learned more about healthy cooking from Blair Culinary Institute, healthy vegetables from Muir Ranch and how to be more nutritionally savvy from Nutrition & Wellness Network.

Since being fiscally sound has a large impact on being physically healthy, the Fiscal Fitness Station sponsored by Simplicity Bank provided information on this topic to over 103 people.

Many people took advantage of the information available on various health issues like Heart Disease, Alzheimer's, Asthma and Sickle Cell Anemia. Others learned about services in the community offered by Young & Healthy, Day One, the YWCA and more.

Since disaster strikes with no warning, the Pasadena Fire Department shared information on Disaster Preparedness.

Starting on October 1, people can sign up for the Healthcare Exchanges that have been created through The Affordable Care Act, which is fondly called Obamacare. While some try to make Obamacare bad for you, there are many good things that come with it. Some people are already enjoying the benefits, but for those with no insurance today, October 1 was your day to start to change this.

Mary Donnelly Crocker, Executive Director for Young and Healthy, gave a very informative presentation on The Affordable Care Act.  She answered many questions, gave the facts and dispelled myths and misinformation. She also let those in attendance know that California is ready, and you will start to hear more about Covered California as a result of this act.

The Annual Health Summit is led by the Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. It is a collaboration of many organizations that volunteer their time to make a difference in our community. The Premier Sponsor for this event is Kaiser Permanente.
