Sports Watching & Wondering

John Randolph RogersEven as this piece is being written, the Angels are locked into an all-out struggle against the powerful Yankees. The Yankees have spent enough money to have an all-star at every position on the team. They lead this series by a 2-1, but they are not comfortable, because the Angels have not given up. This is a team, in every sense of the word. They don't have the most talent, but they are the most aggressive team in baseball. They are always trying to steal the base, or to take an extra one. They have worked hard for their success, and they may be forced to go into the night, but they won't go gently.

On the other hand, the wheels seem to have come off for the Dodgers. The Phillies lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1. Manny Ramirez may be their best player. He may also be there a worse one, and then never certain which of them will shore up the game. This team lacks leadership and intensity. Manager Joe Torre seems like a nice man, who lets things happen, and who hopes for the best. The Phillies have better players than the Dodgers do, and they seem to be much more motivated, during the games. Well, there is always next year.

Frank and Jamie McCourt have been married for nearly 30 years, and they have four teenage sons. He is the owner of the Dodgers, and she is the CEO. In the midst of the greatest baseball tryout, and to the surprise of many people, they are involved in a divorce proceeding. There is reported to be at least worth $800 million, and this will have to be divided between them. That won't be easy, and this is the kind of case that divorce lawyers dream about.

Pete Carroll and some of the USC Trojans did their best to lose last Saturday's game at Notre Dame. At one point in the second half of the game, they had a 20 point lead. They also had Allen Bradford, one of the most terrifying running backs in all of college football. The smartest thing that he could have done was to let Bradford close out the game. However, Carroll has become obsessed with his quarterback, and he continued to use the forward pass, even when it was unnecessary to take that risk. This approach led to an interception, and nearly allowed Notre Dame to tie, and possibly to win the game.

The Trojans are talented, but they are probably the most undisciplined team, among the top 25. Do not be surprised if USC is upset again and again. It was a real pleasure to see Charlie Weis suffer another loss.

Oregon State University upset USC last year. They have come back to try to do the same thing this Saturday at the Coliseum. This school, like the old USC teams, relies more on running backs than on quarterbacks. Jacqizz Rodgers gained 180 yards for them in their victory over the Trojans. He is back, and the reports are that he is better than ever. There is the fear of another upset in the air.

It has been reported that Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian had a wedding license, and that they had a ceremony. However, it was also reported that they did not actually get legally married. At this point, they are having such severe disagreements over the prenuptial agreement that they might get divorced, before they actually get married. If you have a marriage license for 31 days, and don't use it, it becomes null and void. They are getting close to that deadline.

In the words of Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?" I was watching the football game between Boise State and Tulsa, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The bench for the Boise State team was unusually close to the fans in the stands. The distance was just 2 feet. There was a group of hecklers, led by about six of the 50-year-old fans, who yelled profanities and other insults at the visiting team for about three hours. This also happens to visiting high school teams. Away from the field, the backers are probably good citizens, and responsible family men. They would not like anyone behaving towards their sons, the way they did to the visitors. They need to remember that they are verbally assaulting teenage college students. If they saw how ridiculous they look on television, they might behave better in the future.

Congratulations to Michael Cooper, as he begins his first season as the head coach of the USC Women's Basketball Team. He enjoyed a great deal of success with the Sparks in the WNBA, and it would have been a great sendoff, if they could have won the championship this year. Although they came close, it was not to be; his team will be playing their home games in the beautiful Galen Center, and this new facility should be a big help to him and his recruiting efforts. Again, congratulations Coop, fight on!

The 3-3 Bruins are headed to Tucson to play the 4-2 Wildcats. They are likely to come home with a 3-4 record. They had high hopes at the beginning of the season, but they are having to deal with the ugly reality that they just aren't ready yet.
