Seventh Annual Evensong for Women's Voices

Black news from Pasadena - Arts - Annual Evensong Invitational for Women's Voices at St. LukesMarch 6, 2014 — The women of the choir of St. Luke's, Monrovia, along with guest singers, will present a free public performance of its Seventh Annual Evensong Invitational for Women's Voices on Sunday, March 16, at 4 p.m. The concert will be held at the historic church, 122 S. California Ave. at Foothill Blvd. The event will be followed by a wine and cheese reception in Guild Hall. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Evensong has been regularly sung since the 16th Century. The tradition has produced a magnificent repertoire of choral music, including some of the greatest pieces of sacred music in existence. The choir, conducted by Music Director and composer Kent Bennett Jones, will perform Denis Mason's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, Malcolm Archer's Preces and Responses, and the anthem Mary and Martha and the Phos Hilaron (O Gracious Light) by Jones. The Director will accompany the singers on the three-manual, 42-rank Bascom & Vaughan pipe organ.

The music program at St. Luke's is decidedly ambitious for a parish of this size," says Jones. "We have been blessed with an excellent pipe organ, a massive music library, a choir of fine musicians who have genuine camaraderie, and world-class acoustics. We also have a congregation that appreciates the choir's work and has a taste for excellence in music. Our Evensong performances are among our most highly anticipated presentations."
