Selecting a Spouse for the Right Reasons

African American news from Pasadena - Religion - Eternal loveRecently I saw a vintage black & white picture of a loving couple on Facebook. She wore a black bikini and he wore black swimming trunks. The young dark-haired physically attractive couple leaned against a boulder on the beach posing for the camera. The male was muscular, handsome and had a glowing smile while the shapely woman eyes beamed with joy. They held hands as her head rested gently on his shoulder. The date on the photograph was 1963.

Many men and women are drawn to each other because of their good looks. In fact, many choose their mates solely on looks. On TV, in magazine and on billboard ads good looks attracts superficial relationships. However, true love is more than surface beauty. Seldom does a physical attraction endure the unforeseen occurrences of mental and/or physical health issues. Being lured by sexual gratification can also be temporal and predicated on a variety of factors. Love is more than beauty, sweet words and romantic excursions. Eternal love endures beyond the proverbial honeymoon . . . it goes the distance.

I'm reminded of two scriptures that are usually spoken as one scripture because they work so well together: Ecclesiastes 9:11 "For the race is not given to the swift . . ." Matthews 24: 13 "But he who endures to the end shall be saved."

The lovebirds in the 1963 photograph, I assure you, survived many storms. They were not torn apart by the inevitability of dark clouds. The amazing thing about the photograph is that there was also an updated photograph taken at the same beach location. They seemed in their mid- to late seventies. They leaned against the same boulder on the same beach. They both wore similar beach attire as before. The woman's head rested on the same shoulder of her man. Again his smile glowed with happiness and her eyes beamed with joy. However each had gained weight and their hair was thin and gray. He was practically bald except for a few strands and with a pot belly. The photograph was dated 2013. The photograph made me realize that when seeking an eternal love you must look pass the superficial.
