At its height, the Harlem Renaissance movement in Black America was taking root through the nation's inter cities; Los Angeles was no exception. Spawning the rise and visibility of Black art, poetry, music and literature, this was a time of Black enlightenment in many voices. Although much has been said on this subject, little has been mentioned about its effects on and relations to the Black church during this same time. Just how much of an effect did this movement have on the church and, in turn, how much of it was inspired by the church? This lecture and seminar will explore the Black religious scene on Los Angeles' Central Avenue during Central Avenue's Black cultural boom of the roaring 20's and 30's. A museum tour focusing on the Black Renaissance in Los Angeles will follow.
The Lecture and Tour will be conducted by Dr. Jamal-Dominique Hopkins, Professor at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA, and author of "Ecclesiastes" in the African Bible: Reading Israel's Scriptures through Africa and the African Diaspora (Fortress Press), 2009; and "Duty or Responsibility? The African American Evangelical's Identity" in the Journal of African American Christian Thought (2009): 35-38.
