Students in Walden School's Kindergarten/1st grade class have been learning about balance as part of a unit on physics. They made their own balance scales using cardboard. They folded a short piece of cardboard into a triangle to create a base and a pivot point for the beam. Students balanced the long piece of cardboard on the point of the triangle. Once they were successful at balancing the cardboard they added clay to the balance beam and experimented with moving the balance point to different parts of the beam. They also added the weight of a marble to the materials on the beam. Students learned to move the balance point to different places on the beam and to move the weight on the beam to different points to balance the beam.
