Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles: Deportation

Deport the Children and Be Done With It

A hearing Wednesday in the House Judiciary Committee and a head-on attack to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and other Republicans are two most recent examples of how the GOP and anti-immigrants are intentionally manipulating a human crisis and shamelessly attacking immigrants, families, and Latinos while halting any progress on immigration reform.

The following are statements for Angelica Salas, executive director for CHIRLA:

"While thousands of Central American children and families have been forced to flee in desperation from the grasp of gangs, organized crime, common criminals, coyotes, and unstable economies, Republicans and anti-immigrants on The Hill have had a field day calling for more border enforcement, mass children and family deportations, and the end of a humane immigration relief program that has benefitted more than 500,000 young immigrants.

"For too long Republicans and extremists have favored mass deportations as the solution to our nation's broken and cruel immigration system. Americans by a large majority have rejected this solution and demanded a legislative, humane, and common-sense approach. Although political survival has forced the hand of some in the GOP to act less unreasonable on immigration, the racist and un-American attitude of blaming immigrants and deporting entire families has reared its ugly head again this week.

"We denounce any and all attempts by Republicans in Congress to criminalize and blame children and families for the current crisis at the border. We reject any attempt by Republicans and other extremists to take us back to the days when overzealous rhetoric on immigration led us to callous decisions which tore so many families apart and damaged our nation's credibility as a fair and democratic nation. We will defend the dignity, humanity, and rights of these children and families and we will protect DACA as the only ray of sunshine for millions who strive every day to be full contributors to their nation.

"The crisis of minors and families attempting to cross the border deserves a humane and dignified approach by the US government, not knee-jerk reactions that poison our nation's generous and fair nature. The easy target of criminal hands and apathetic governments should not become the next target of irrational and chaotic leaders in Congress whose time may come soon when our nation's voters, immigrants and Latinos in particular, tire of their callousness and lack of compassion and creativity in solving our nation's challenges."
