Reverend Dr. Frances Harris is pastor of Hillside Church of God In Christ in Altadena. Harris' daughter Jerice Kenebrew is a pastor's wife and seasoned Gospel singer extraordinaire. They are both P.K.'s (Pastor's Kids) and as long as each can remember they have been involved with their family's church one way or another.
At the age of sixteen Reverend Harris was the Director of the Choir at Saint's Home Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. Since then she has worked with Gospel luminaries such as Mattie Moss Clark, (Mother of The Clark Sisters) Joe Westmoreland, Andre Crouch and Walter Hawkins (former husband of Tramaine Hawkins).
Today she is celebrating ten years as the Senior Pastor of Hillside Church of God In Christ located at on north Fair Oaks in Altadena. She was previously co-Pastor with her father Elder Mendres L. Bereal who founded Hillside church in 1968. In 1989 the church purchased the building at on Fair Oaks where the church now stands. She is married to Elder Jerry Harris.
Harris was born in Phoenix but her experiences have brought her to California. She graduated from John Muir High School and Pasadena City College. She later became a Cosmetologist for the Movie Industry. She has served in the church at every level of COGIC church affairs both locally and nationally.Bishop Charles E. Blake, national head of the Churches of God in Christ long ago recognized her talents for church administration and ministry. She has served as a supervising District Missionary, an Evangelist, and held many other offices. As a pioneer in the COGIC, Blake appointed her to be the State Secretary for the National COGIC. She is the first female to hold that position. As a pastor of Hillside church, she is also one of the first female Pastors of a Church of God in Christ. She is among the Bereal family that includes six brothers who are also pastors. Her sisters include an Evangelist and a singer. Carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the family business.
Jerice Kenebrew is the First Lady of historic Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. This Muir High School graduate assists her mother at Hillside when she is not assisting her husband, Reverend Geric Kenebrew, at Mt Olive. They reside in Altadena with their son.
The legacy of the Bereals includes the musical legacy of her mother, uncles and aunts. Kenebrew is one of the heirs to that legacy. She has directed the Hillside choir for years where she also performed as lead singer for that powerful choir. Today she serves as musical director at Mt. Olive COGIC.
Jerice has been singing since she was eight years old. In addition to directing and singing with the choir, she is a member of a group made up of Bereal family cousins called, "Third Generation." This title honors the tradition of gospel music set by her family for three generations. Her brother David is a musician who plays at Hillside and also carries on the tradition. In addition to her work with the family churches, she has done studio work with well known artists including Christina Aguilera, and others.
Kenebrew will perform at the Women of Achievement Breakfast sponsored by The Journal on April 24, 2010 at Brookside Golf Club. Pastor Frances Harris will offer the prayer.
