On Sunday, May 19, 2013, in a ceremony fit for a leader, the community came out in mass to fill the Pasadena Central Library Auditorium. The event, attended by Pasadena residents, community leaders and politicians, past and present, including three past Mayors of Pasadena, including William Paparian, past Pasadena Police Chief, Jerry Oliver, current Pasadena Police Chief Philip Sanchez, Pasadena Fire Chief, Calvin Wells, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, fellow Pasadena city councilmembers and newly appointed Pasadena Vice Mayor, Jacque Robinson, and dozens more Pasadenans and out of town guests who came to support and participate in this historic event.
The event marked the changing of the guard and crowning of new leadership for the community of African Americans, in particular. John Kennedy, who was born and raised in Pasadena, wore a pin with the number '42' on it, symbolizing another luminary who was born and raised in Pasadena, Jackie Robinson.
