On Saturday, May 10, 2014, the Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is hosting its 26th Annual "Fashionetta: Scholarship and Salute to Mothers Fundraiser Luncheon and Fashion Show" at the Glendale Hilton. The chapter is excited and proud to honor Reverend Nolanda Love as the Mother of the Year.
Reverend Nolanda Love is the Founder/CEO of Nolanda Love Ministries, Inc. and she is well-known in the Pasadena Community where she has worked in collaboration with many community organizations and ministries that include 12 years of service as an ordained Elder at Victory Bible Church and 25 years as Minister of Music at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. She has also worked with The Links Inc., Women In Action, So. Calif., the Gospel Announcers Guild, The Boy's Club of Pasadena, The Late Donny Roberts & Unity, Jean Burch Ministries, Senator Carol Liu, and the Southern California Women's Health Conference. She is currently an active member of the Ministry Team of The Church on the Way in Van Nuys under Pastor Tim Clark, Sr. Within the ministry, she strives to do whatever God guides her to do at a given time so she can bring joy to others. Joy is an important concept and word to Reverend Nolanda because she feels that it means to help people through their struggles, but be strong in the Lord as His Joy gives us strength.

A filled-to-capacity crowd came out to honor the Journal's 2014 Women of Achievement. The honorees chosen for their service to their churches were Jennie Beard from Metropolitan Baptist Church, Ruby Bourne of Bethlehem Church, Gwen Buchannan of New Revelation Baptist Church, Carrie Darkwa of Morningstar Baptist Church, Evelyn Epps of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, Phlunte' Riddle of Abundant Harvest Christian Fellowship, Lois Tusan of Scott United Methodist Church, and Patricia Williams of Friendship Baptist Church.

Celebrate nature, art, music, and community at Pasadena's 12th annual Earth and Arts Festival, www.cityofpasadena.net/earthday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly Street, at Raymond Avenue, and, across the street at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Avenue. Pasadena's Earth and Arts Festival is one of the biggest free "green" events in Southern California with family friendly activities, exhibits and entertainment for all ages.
Master of Ceremonies is noted author, performer and KPCC (89.3 FM) public radio commentator Sandra Tsing Loh, http://www.lohdownonscience.org/. Live music and entertainment will be featured throughout the day on two stages including kids' music, world music, nationally touring musicians, a drum circle, and several local dance ensembles. The main stage is on Raymond Avenue and the second stage is inside the Armory building. (Entertainment schedule below.)
