African American news from Pasadena - Community - Pasadena Senior Center August eventsThere is something for everyone in August at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly Street. You do not have to be a member to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, August 1, 8, 15 and 29, at 1 p.m.

Movies can take us to other places and times like nothing else.

  • August 1: "The Monuments Men" (2014, PG-13) starring George Clooney and Matt Damon.
  • August 8: "Goldfinger" (1964, PG) starring Sean Connery and Gert Fröbe.
  • August 15: "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (1954) starring Jane Powell and Howard Keel.
  • August 29: "Still Mine" (2012, PG-13) starring James Cromwell and Geneviève Bujold.

The seventh annual Identity Festival organized by the Armenian Community Coalition of Pasadena was a smashing success on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Victory Park that day was transformed into a bee hive with more than 4,000 people, Armenians and non-Armenians alike, from all walks of life were in and out through out the day from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m. in the evening. This event was co-sponsored by Congresswoman Judy Chu, The City of Pasadena, and the Pasadena Library.

The theme of the day was to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first Armenian settlement in the city of Pasadena, which was incorporated into cityhood just three years earlier. I was pleasantly impressed that the Mistresses of the Ceremony were young and talented Armenian Ladies from our community, namely Nayri Krouzian and Serah Chahinian, who masterfully conducted the program in English and Armenian respectively. Another young artist, Sevag Chahinian, was the D.J. for the day.

Los Angeles, CA – On July 31st, 2014 Schools Mountain View Elementary Independence Elementary, Middleton Elementary and Carver Middle School, some of the schools chosen to perform at the Woodcraft Rangers Excellence Gala at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Little Tokyo, will take the stage. The Gala offers a night of fine dining and entertainment in which all proceeds will benefit the programs of Woodcraft Rangers.

Youth participants will have the opportunity to showcase their hard work at an event to promote the agency, and will get to mingle with celebrities and honorees. Included in this year's program is Woodcraft Rangers alumni and ESPN radio host Marcellus Wiley, one of many guests to receive awards throughout the night. CEO Chris Johnson says "Woodcraft Rangers' NVision programs offers a myriad of opportunities to have youth express themselves. By having our youth perform at the Gala, it gives the opportunity to the students we serve to show their talents and express their flair to an exceptional audience."
