Beginning July 31st at 9:30 AM and continuing every Saturday through August 28th, Heritage Square Museum hosts free classes in history, architecture, period fashion and much, much more for potential volunteers.
Set among the historic architecture on display at the museum, students will learn hands-on what makes a home Victorian, how to dress appropriately for each interpretive period, interior design and other fun skills. Volunteering is a great way to share an appreciation of history with members of the general public.
Learn how and why Los Angeles went from a tiny pueblo in 1850 into a bustling metropolis by 1900. Discover the fun, sometimes seedy, always interesting facts about Southern California at Heritage Square's volunteer training. Volunteer opportunities include giving tours of historic structures, playing living history characters, staffing events, helping with the restoration of the homes, working in an historic garden, serving on committees and keeping the museum thriving.
As the museum reaches out to new audiences, bilingual Spanish and Chinese speaking volunteers are especially needed. Volunteering at the museum helps to connect the current generations of young, and not so young, with a history often forgotten in the textbooks.
