An exhibition titled "Allensworth: 100 Years of the California Dream" is currently on display in the African American Heritage Room at Shatford Library at Pasadena City College.
The exhibition, which celebrates the centennial of the historic town of Allensworth and its impact on California, ends on January 20.
Allensworth is a settlement founded in 1908 by Col. Allen Allensworth, Professor William Payne, Dr. W.H. Peck, J.W. Palmer, and Harry Mitchel. As an ideal social enterprise free from the restrictions imposed during "the nadir" of race relations in America, Allensworth symbolized the dream of African Americans across California and the U.S.
The exhibition was made possible through collaboration with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California African American Museum, and the California Community Empowerment Foundation. For more information, please contact the Shatford Library at (626) 585-7221.
