El Monte, CA – In a time when resources are scarce for families, the community is rallying to support school children with a Back to School Resource Fair for families whose children attend school districts based in El Monte.
The City of El Monte, the Downtown El Monte Business Association, the El Monte/South El Monte Chamber of Commerce, El Monte Kiwanis, the Upper San Gabriel Valley Water District, the El Monte Union High School, El Monte City and Mountain View School Districts have partnered up to host the Back to School Resource Fair to provide free school supplies, socks and haircuts.
"Our community is coming together to make sure that our children are prepared to go back to school," City Councilwoman Victoria "Vicky" Martinez said. "Providing free resources for our kids and supporting our local businesses, that's the beauty of this event."
Councilwoman Martinez, who is spearheading the fair on behalf of the City, is grateful for all the support the event is receiving from the community, and is encouraging families to come out and take advantage of what the Back to School Resource Fair has to offer.
"Since the day we started planning, we've gotten such great response from so many businesses and organizations wanting to contribute and participate in this event. It has the makings of what could be one of the best back-to-school fairs we've ever had," she said. "There's going to be lots of school supplies and giveaways at what's going to be a great event for our community."
Local business and industry are sponsoring the Back to School Resource Fair Healthy Family Expo which will provide free interactive information booths. The Professional Institute of Beauty will give free haircuts for school-aged children and Sketchers will raffle off a free pair of shoes every hour. Families will also have the opportunity to purchase school uniforms.
The fair will also provide free finger printing of children by the El Monte Police Department's Volunteers Caring and Patrolling (VCAPs).
Visitors to the Back to School Resource Fair are being asked to stop by the Be the Match Foundation's bone marrow registration booth to support Alexandrea Vizcarra. The 19-year-old El Monte resident is stricken with a recurrence of leukemia and needs bone marrow to survive. No one in her family is a match and neither is anyone on the national bone marrow registry. The family is reaching out to the public for help.
All resources and services will be held on a first come, first served basis for those attending El Monte schools. For more information, please contact the El Monte/South El Monte Chamber of Commerce at (626) 443-0180.
