YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley Empowers Young Girls with Funds from the Tournament of Roses

YWCA 2009 PasadenaPasadena CA (July 23, 2009) - Earlier this year the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley received a generous grant from the Tournament of Roses Foundation to fund their 2009 Summer Girls' Empowerment Camp. Tamika Farr, YWCA Executive Director, attended the grant reception on the third of June where the YWCA's work in the community was celebrated and valued as a necessary part of a thriving city. Camp began on July 13 and takes participants to a different college campus every week, a fun field trip every Friday and also provides relevant empowerment curriculum and team-building games among other things. The empowerment curriculum focuses on building self-esteem, friendships, new skills, exploring new ideas and encouraging girls to dream big.

The generous grant from the Tournament of Roses allows the YWCA to expand the opportunities and activities the program participants are able to experience throughout the camp.

Funds from the Rotary Club of Pasadena were also contributed to provide scholarships for 10 girls. Empowering women is one of the hallmark values of the YWCA and is embodied in their programs that focus on the health and development of young girls.YWCA 2009 Pasadena

"We know that ‘empowerment' isn't something that just happens to you as a woman, it starts early, with your family and friends, the education you are exposed to and even the women around you that instinctively give you the right to be empowered by simply being strong and confident themselves," explains Ayana Rose, YWCA program director, "this is why it is so critical to invest and pour into these girls right now at this young age."
For over 100 years, the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley has stood for a woman's right to be treated with dignity and respect. The YWCA acts via a wide range of programs that strive towards the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women in Pasadena and the West San Gabriel Valley.
