Whole Lot of Poetry Going On for National Poetry Month . . .

. . . Kickoff Was Saturday at Santa Catalina Branch Library

This April, as National Poetry Month, offers lots of poetry events to choose from in the month-long San Gabriel Valley Poetry Festival. The "kickoff" event for the festival and featured a free raffle and prizes for all readers! The reading was hosted by Rina Rose and Mary Torregrossa inside the backroom of the Santa Catalina Branch of the Pasadena Public Library on 999 East Washington Blvd. April is filled with events, so dust off that poem you have hidden in your drawer and get ready to read, write or listen to some great poetry. See below for a schedule of all of the events in the festival.

  • Wednesday, April 10th, 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. - SHOUT! Open mic hosted by Eric Morago featuring Andres Bermejo, Xochitl Julisa-Bermejo, & TBA ,Half Off Books on 6708 Greenleaf Avenue, Whittier.
  • Saturday, April 13th, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. - THE DEAD & THE LIVING open poetry reading (each reader reads poems from dead and living poets) hosted by CaLokie inside the backroom of the Santa Catalina Branch of the Pasadena Public Library on 999 E. Washington Blvd.
  • Wednesday, April 17th, 7:30 p.m. - HAIKU Open Mic hosted by Debbie Kolodji at Bean Town Coffee Bar 45 N Baldwin Avenue, Sierra Madre, CA 91024. National Haiku Day (17 for 17 syllables).
  • Friday, April 19th, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. - SGV POETRY IN MOTION: A TEEN AND YOUTH SHOWCASE AND COMPETITION hosted by Christopher Luke Trevill. Arcadia Public Library, 20 W. Duarte Road.
  • Saturday, April 20th, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. - ESSENCE AND ESSENTIALS FOR WRITING POETRY: Go where it takes you but take only what you need led by Mary Torregrossa in the meeting room of the Altadena Library on 600 E. Mariposa Street.
  • Sunday, April 21st, 10 a.m. to Noon - EARTH DAY POETRY HIKE host Khadija Anderson, meets lower parking lot Millard Canyon, Altadena, info: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call (206) 551-2567.
  • Tuesday, April 23rd, 6 p.m to 8 p.m. - WRITING UNDER THE "INFLUENCE" (of music) Poetry & Prose workshop led by Mira Mataric in the meeting room of the Altadena Library on 600 E. Mariposa Street.
  • Friday, April 26th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. - ZZyZx WriterZ OPEN MIKE & LIVE PERFORMANCE hosted by Kimberly Cobian at the Holy Grounds Cafe on 5371 Alhambra Avenue on El Sereno/Alhambra border.
  • Saturday, April 27th, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. - POETRY & COOKIES anthology reading hosted by Pauline Dutton at the Altadena Senior Center on 560 E. Mariposa Street. Short open mic.
  • Monday, April 29th, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - CO-INSPIRATORS: POETS, PAINTERS, MUSIC MAKERS (features 7 poets) hosted by Rey Romea Luminarias in the Donald Wright Auditorium inside the Pasadena Central Library on 285 E. Walnut Street.
