Free August Activities at Pasadena Senior Center

There is something for everyone at the Pasadena Senior Center in August. Events listed below are free for PSC members. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

  • Cane Fu – Thursday, August 1, at 10 a.m.

If you walk with a cane, learn how to use it to protect yourself and avoid being a victim of crime on the street.

  • Legal Services – Thursdays, August 1 and 15, at 10 a.m.

Attorneys will be on hand to discuss your issues involving wills and trusts, conservatorships, durable power of attorney and estate planning. Appointments are required. (626) 795-4331.

  • Acupuncture Versus Medicine: Which is Better? – Thursday, August 8, at noon.

Learn the benefits and risks of acupuncture and medicines for various health conditions and which approach is right for you. Box lunches will be served to the first 50 people with confirmed reservations. (626) 795-4331.

  • Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) – Thursday, August 15, at 10 a.m.

Dietary information recommended by the USDA promotes health and wellness. Following a simple guide can help prevent and manage chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

  • Health Fair – Friday, August 16, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Glucose screenings (with two-hour fasting required) and blood pressure and hearing screenings are among the services offered. For details and more information call (626) 685-6732.

  • LA Opera 2013/2014 Season Preview – Monday, August 19, at 1 p.m.

An LA Opera community educator will present a fun and informative talk about Georges Bizet's "Carmen," one of the most popular and beloved operas of all time, and highlight the productions on the upcoming season's schedule.

  • Gourmet Dining Club – Tuesday, August 20, at 5 p.m.

Join us for lively conversation and great food at this month's featured restaurant, Spring Gardens, 187 N. Sierra Madre Blvd. in Pasadena. Call team captains Margaret Lawson and Syd Heyman at (626) 794-5858 to make your reservation.

  • Social Security Planning – Thursday, August 22, at 10 a.m.

Achieving the goal of a secure, comfortable retirement is much easier when you have a financial plan and know what you can expect from Social Security.

  • Book Club at the Center – Friday, August 23, at 1 p.m.

Read "Bel Canto" by Ann Patchett and then join other members of the Senior Center Book Club for a discussion. A revered operatic soprano is among the hostages taken from a South American diplomat's home by terrorists, leading to unexpected relationships as the characters begin to forget the real danger that has been set in motion.   • Senior Living Options – Thursday, August 29, at 10 a.m.

Explore options for helping seniors and their families make the right decisions about staying at home or moving into a professional facility during this presentation that will include costs for each option and tips for preparing emotionally for necessary changes.

  • Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, August 2, 9 and 16, at 1 p.m.

A great movie allows us to enter and escape into its world.

--August 2: 'Skyfall" (2012) starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and Javier Bardem;

--August 9: "Out of Africa" (1985) starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford;

--August 16: "The Great Gatsby" (1974) starring Robert Redford, Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern.
