Pasadena’s Homeless Treated to Makeovers and Portraits this Holiday Season

On Saturday, December 7, photographers, make-up artists, hair stylists and volunteers gave homeless men, women and children a special gift. To celebrate the Fifth Annual Help-Portrait, volunteers offered makeovers and photo portraits to the residents of Pasadena-based Union Station Homeless Services – just in time for the holidays.

Pasadena's Help-Portrait took place at Centennial Place, a 142-unit SRO (single room occupancy) apartment building, run in partnership by Union Station and Abode Communities. Residents of Union Station's shelters and apartments were treated to a very special make over and photo shoot.

"This picture will actually join [my family] closer together so that they can recognize me as their grandfather and as a person of society," said one past Help Portrait participant.

In 2009, Help-Portrait began as an idea that transformed into a movement in just three months. The idea behind Help-Portrait is simple: (1) Find someone in need, (2) Take their portrait, (3) Print their portrait, and (4) Deliver their portrait.

In the last four years, 20,371 photographers and 32,299 volunteers have given more than 282,295 portraits. Help-Portrait is a global movement in more than 2,100 locations in 62 countries.  The annual Help-Portrait event takes place on the second Saturday of December each year in addition to special events as the need arises.
