Martin Luther King Celebration in Pasadena

Black news from Pasadena - Community News - MLK celebration - Dr. Joy Jittaun Moore keynote speakerDr. Martin Luther King's enduring influence on the continuing struggle to ensure equality and justice for every American will be celebrated at a community service to be held at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 2283 N. Fair Oaks Avenue, Altadena, on Sunday, January 19, at 3:30 pm.

Rev. John B. Bledsoe, president of the sponsoring organization, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Pasadena, said in announcing the event: "It's more important than ever to make sure that Dr. King's challenge to America is proclaimed and understood by every one of us. King called on our society to embrace even the poorest and most powerless among us in the American dream. We're far from that goal, and we've got lots of work to do."

The Celebration will involve religious and civic leaders from Pasadena and Altadena and will review some of Dr. King's greatest moments and most profound challenges. Some uplifting Gospel music will be presented by a special MLK Celebration Choir.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Joy Jittaun Moore, Associate Dean for African American Church Studies and Assistant Professor of Preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary. She has completed her first year at Fuller, after four years at Duke University Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina, where she was the Associate Dean for Church Relations and the Associate Dean of Black Church Studies. Previous to that, she was the Assistant Professor of Preaching, Director of Women's and Ethnic Ministries, and Director of Student Life at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, and was the Chaplain and Director of Church Relations at Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan.
