Event to Honor The DeVaughns' and The Hopkins'
On Sunday, June 22, 2014, the NAACP Altadena Branch will host the 2014 Anthony "Tony" Stewart Freedom Fund Luncheon at the Castaway Restaurant & Banquet Center in Burbank California. The theme is "30th Anniversary and Salute to the Black Press." The salute acknowledges more than a century of mutual struggles and successes the NAACP and the Black Press have had in the cause of Civil and Human Rights.
Alice A. Huffman, NAACP California/Hawaii State Conference President and NAACP National Board member, will give the keynote address. Huffman has distinguished herself among State Conference presidents, twice receiving the National NAACP Thalheimer Award for best State Conference in the nation. Under her leadership, the State NAACP has become one of the most sought after organization in California's policy arena. She is recognized annually by the Sacramento Observer as one of the 100 most influential Californians, and listed in the top 100 in California by Capitol Weekly. She is a past appointee of three democratic and republican governors, and serves on several state and national boards.
Honorary Chairperson for the event is Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., Executive Publisher/CEO Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper, owner of the L.A. Watts Times, the Bakewell Media Company and former president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
Joe C. and Ruthie Hopkins, business professionals, publishers of the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Journal News and former president of the West Coast Newspaper Publishers Association, will receive the "Lifetime Achievement Award."
Southern California Publishers and members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and will be acknowledged.
The emcee for the event will be Anthony Portantino, former California Assemblyman for the 44th District.
Entertainment will be performed by current and former Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) participants.
