Local Middle School Students Learn How to Write Computer Applications

Black news from Pasadena - Community - youth application writers

On Saturday, August 23, 2014, twenty extremely bright and eager local middle school students participated in a very interactive computer code writing session at Polytechnic School in Pasadena. The students participated in the second of a series of "STEAM:CODERS" workshops. STEAM:CODERS was launched in July 2014 as a collaborative effort between Gamma Zeta Boulé Foundation, Delta Xi Boulé Social Action Committee and the Black Data Professional Association. STEAM:CODERS stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. It is a cross-section of scientific and artistic disciplines in pursuit of creativity and innovation.

The program targets middle school students who have a desire to learn more about computer science, art and design. According to Harlan Ward, President of Gamma Zeta Boulé Foundation, "STEAM:CODERS is committed to developing, encouraging and promoting African-American students in building a foundation in computer science and math. In addition, the program provides students with an opportunity to develop computer science skills and unlock their aptitude to imagine and create technological innovations." STEAM:CODERS is free to students and parents.

During the class session, members of the Black Data Professional Association introduced the students to the world of software programming (coding) and mobile application development. By the end of the class, the students had the opportunity to develop two applications for their computers and cellphones. Afterwards, students and parents enjoyed an excellent pizza lunch.
