NAACP Altadena Branch Nominations

The NAACP Altadena Branch will be electing new officers and Executive Committee members for the two year term effective 1/1/15 to 12/31/16.

Nominations of "members in good standing" will be held at our regular meeting on October, 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at 730 E. Altadena Drive, Altadena, CA.

The election will be held at our regular meeting on November 132014, from 6:00p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the same location.

 

Waste Management Encourages Parents to Teach New Recycling Habits as School Year Begins

Five Easy Ways to Make This School Year the Greenest Ever for Children

School is back in session for kids and Waste Management of Southern California would like to encourage everyone to kick off the new school year by being green, both in classrooms and at home.

"Back to school is an exciting time for everyone and a great opportunity to recommit to good recycling habits," said Eloisa Orozco area communications manager for Waste Management of Southern California. "Fostering good recycling habits among children at an early age can help develop the next generation of environmental champions so that together, we can conserve earth's precious resources."

August Wilson Monologue Competition

Foothill Arts Collective (FAC), a local nonprofit organization, invites San Gabriel Valley high school students to an informational session to learn how to audition for the August Wilson Monologue Competition (AWMC) on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. hosted by the Richard Allen Theater Guild at First A.M.E Church, 1700 N. Raymond Avenue, Pasadena.

The AWMC involves students performing a one to three minute monologue selected from Wilson's 10 "Century Cycle" plays depicting African American life over the past 10 decades. A representative from the Center Theatre Group, which hosts the Southern California AWMC Regional auditions will give a presentation at FAC's September 27th event. The Center Theatre Group believes "The August Wilson Monologue Competition enables high school students to bring Wilson's memorable characters to life."

Interested high school students (10th, 11th and 12th grades) of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to audition.

Pasadena Health Department Confirms Five West Nile Virus Cases

African American news from Pasadena - Community News - West Nile virus hereThe Pasadena Public Health Department today announced that tests have confirmed five human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) this month in its jurisdiction. The last case of WNV previously confirmed by the Pasadena Public Health Department was in December 2012.

WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Signs and symptoms may include fever, body aches, rash, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Up to about 80 percent of people infected have no apparent symptoms and can go undiagnosed, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Severe cases, while rare, can include brain inflammation, paralysis or death.

Pasadena Senior Center - Free October Events

African American news from Pasadena - Community - Pasadena Senior Center free eventsThere is something for everyone in October at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly Street.

You do not have to be a member to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

  • Caregiver Education and Support Group – Wednesdays, October 1 and 15, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

This twice-monthly group provides information, resources and emotional support for caregivers. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month.

  • Exercises for Chronic Lower Back Pain – Thursday, October 2, at 10 a.m.

Chronic lower back pain affects many seniors and can cause serious impairment in daily functioning and activities. Learn how specific exercises can strengthen muscles to help seniors cope and avoid this common issue. Presented by Vincent Physical Therapy.
