ACT-SO Competition to Kick Off 2014 NAACP National Convention

The 36th annual Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition will kick off in Las Vegas on July 18th to July 20th during the 105th NAACP Annual Convention. Participants from around the country will gather at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for the final competitions and an Awards Ceremony on July 20th.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by actor and ACT-SO alum Bresha Webb from the television series Love That Girl. The ceremony will feature performances by McClain and previous ACT-SO winners.

Students will compete in 27 competitions in five categories: business, humanities, visual arts, performing arts, and science/STEM.

PCC to Honor Mack Robinson Centennial

African American news from Pasadena - Community - Olympian Mack Robinson to be honoredEleven years before his younger brother, Jackie, broke Major League Baseball's color barrier, Matthew "Mack" Robinson secured his place in history by winning the silver medal in the 200 meter sprint at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He was part of the fabled American team that featured 19 black athletes (including Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe and Archie Williams) whose dominance in track and field shattered Nazi boasts of Aryan supremacy.

When Jesse Owens tore through the tape in the 200 in 20.7 seconds (securing one of his record-setting four gold medals), Mack Robinson was a mere four-tenths of a second behind. Robinson, who had first gained fame running track at Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College (today's PCC), streaked across the finish line in 21.1 seconds giving the US another one, two victory on Hitler's Olympic track.

NOIR California – The Masters of the 30th Century Crime Fiction

A panel of local crime novelists will discuss 20th Century Crime Fiction in California on Thursday, July 31 with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Pasadena Central Library's Donald R. Wright Auditorium, 285 E. Walnut Street. The panel discussion will be led by moderator Denise Hamilton and feature panelists; Kim Cooper, author of The Kept Girl, a great novel inspired by Raymond Chandler's early days in LA, Tom Nolan, Ross Macdonald's biographer, and Julie Rivett, Dashiell Hammett's granddaughter and biographer.

Denise Hamilton is an American crime novelist, journalist and editor of the Edgar-award winning anthologies Los Angeles Noir and Los Angeles Noir 2: The Classics. Hamilton's five Eve Diamond crime novels have been short-listed for many awards, including the Edgar Award in mystery, Willa Cather award in literary fiction and the UK's Creasey Dagger Award.

Women Mean Business—Pathways to Success

Senator Carol Liu announces partnership with Women At Work and YWCA Pasadena Foothills to train young women.

28 teen women will be paired with 28 dynamic community leaders recently honored by the Senator as recipients of the "Women Mean Business " Award of the Year.

The young women, selected by the YWCA Pasadena Foothills, will participate in a weeklong series of job readiness trainings at Women At Work. Professional facilitators will cover such topics as resume and cover letters, interview techniques, dressing for success and financial management and budgeting.

Youth Speakers Highlight Impact of Hillsides Peer Resource Center During One Year Anniversary Celebration

African American news from Pasadena - Community - Hillsides PRC celebrates

Jonathan Hebert spoke about how Hillsides Peer Resource Center helped him come out of his shell and find a job and a career he loves during the Center's one-year anniversary celebration.

Pasadena, CA - Since opening its doors last year, Hillsides Peer Resource Center (PRC), a drop-in center in Pasadena for youth in need ages 16-25, has had more than 5,800 visits and served 463 youth. On June 26, three of these youth gave emotional testimonials during the Center's year anniversary celebration.
