On Saturday, May 10, 2014, the Pasadena Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. hosted its 26th Annual "Fashionetta: Scholarship and Salute to Mothers Fundraiser Luncheon and Fashion Show" where they awarded over $10,000 in Scholarships to Pasadena Area high school college bound students, honored Reverend Nolanda Love as Mother of the Year, and entertained the audience with a fashion show.
The day started with shopping at the vendors. The women of the Pasadena Chapter of AKA are committed to positively impacting the economy by recycling black dollars. The majority of the vendors at this event are black entrepreneurs. For many of the guests, Fashionetta offers a great opportunity to purchase unique Mother's Day gifts.

As the event went into full swing, Beverly White, news reporter with NBC4, was the emcee for this fun filled afternoon. She is an accomplished journalist of nearly 30 years that has covered a variety of breaking national stories for NBC4 that include the Boston Marathon bombings and the Texas fertilizer plant explosion. She set the fashion tone by modeling a fascinator created by Arturo Rios of the Arturo Rios Collection. This designer, whose hats were modeled during the show, has created designs for Lady Gaga. Ms. White was entertaining as she kept this fundraising event moving forward.
During the event, the 2014 scholarship recipients were announced. There were six scholarship awardees and two Book Award recipients. The scholarship recipients each received a $1700 scholarship that will help them pay for tuition, housing and books. The scholarship winners were Renaissance Forster from La Salle HS, Nubia Jackson from Marshall HS, Sadi Massamba from Blair HS, Cheyenne Smith from Marshall HS, Noah Willerford from St. Francis HS and Lance Wyndon from John Muir HS. The book award recipients were Benjamin Patterson from the Ramon C. Cortines HS for the Visual and Performing Arts and Julian Pina from South Pasadena HS.
The sorority also honored Reverend Nolanda Love as the Mother of the Year. Reverend Love has a beautiful spirit and is well known in Pasadena for all the wonderful things that she has done in the community. The organization was proud to have the opportunity to recognize this amazing lady who is a minister, singer, author and the founder of Nolanda Love Ministries, Inc. She is the proud wife of Joe Love, mother of Joe Love, II and Brian Love, and grandmother to Mia, Marcus, Malia, Brian, Jr., Bryce, and Bria. She is committed to supporting community organizations and strives to make a difference throughout the Pasadena Area and beyond.

Franzine Beauty produced an amazing Fashion Show that highlighted fashions from different designers. The DJ perfectly matched the music with the fashions to create a very entertaining show. The models represented women and men of all ages, shapes and sizes. The choreography throughout the event was unique and entertaining. Multiple comments of joy have been made around the creativity of the choreography, especially the scene that represented the growth of a shy man to a confident well-dressed, handsome, ready to step out and impress gentleman.
If you were not in attendance at this event, you missed a treat! The 27th Annual Fashionetta will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015. We look forward to you joining us next year as we award scholarships, honor mothers, provide unique shopping opportunities and entertain you through fashion.
