Women In Action (WIA) held their 42nd annual Jackie Robinson Merit Award Ceremony on Saturday, May 31,2014. The affair was held in the community center at the Jackie Robinson Park, where Pasadena area students were awarded $6,000.00.

WIA is a non-profit African American Women's volunteer organization based in Pasadena, CA. The Jackie Robinson Merit Award presents an opportunity to honor five graduating seniors from each of the Pasadena Unified School District high schools and the Ruth E. Valentine Returning Student award honors a Pasadena City College student. We seek to recognize students that have demonstrated perseverance in overcoming adversity to succeed and flourish in the tradition of Jackie Robinson.

WIA President, Mattie Betts, opened the program with a welcoming and introduction of our Mistress of Ceremony, Allison Moses. The M.C. greeted special guests which included: Senator Carol Liu; Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard; John Kennedy, Pasadena City Council - District 3; Gerald Freeny, Vice President of The Tournament of Roses; Gary Moody, President of Pasadena's NAACP and a Representative of Chris Holden - 41st Assembly District. All congratulated and gave words of support to the students; in addition certificates of commendation were presented to each awardee.

The 2014 Jackie Robinson Merit award recipients were:

  • Fait Agbe, Blair H.S.;
  • Ashley Da Sylveria, Marshall H.S.;
  • Brenden Dickerson, John Muir H.S.; and
  • Malik Howard, Pasadena H.S.

The Pasadena City College Ruth E. Valentine Returning Student award recipients were:

  • Carmella Dean and
  • Tangila Scott.

Sarah Tramel, Jackie Robinson Merit Award Committee Chair, closed the program with congratulations to the merit awardees and thanks to the school principals and counselors.  In addition, she thanked the parents and other attendees.
