Black College Expo Makes Future For Many

Black news from Pasadena - News on the Black College Expo"I know there's a school in the building for me." Those were the words of Monte Marable of Los Angeles who was attending the Black College Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center. After spending a few moments with him one can tell he has a lot of drive and he's headed in the right direction.

His goals are to work in the public arena. "I want to be in political science and work in a city or state environment," said the Santa Monica College sophomore. Accompanied by his mother, Kim, young Monte was trying to take a step in his future. "We are trying to find a fit, we want to take a look at as many colleges as possible."

The two were doing what many parents did to help find a place where their son could get a sound education and a good career. They were part of the overflow crowd of 12,000 who spoke with the more than 40 HBCU recruiters. Some juniors applied right at the Expo and the application fee was waived. Some were offered scholarships by the end of the day.

Anyka Harris drove several hundred miles from Tulora, California. She wanted to get her daughter, Unique, in a college. "I am looking for the perfect college," said Harris. "I want to send her to a place where she can get that good college experience."

Several agencies participated including L.A. City and County Fire Departments, Wells Fargo Bank, to name a few. Actor/comedian Kel Mitchell of the Nickelodeon sitcom, "Keenan and Kel", spoke with several students and parents and also hosted a step show.

Dr. Danielle Spencer-Fields also known as 'Dee' on the seventies hit sitcom, "What's Happening", was on hand. Spencer- Fields is now a veterinarian with an office in Valencia, California. She gave some strong advice to students and parents. "You want to find a college that you can find a major you can live with. You should also find a career that you love and ask yourself if you don't get paid, would you still love doing it," said Spencer Fields. She is a graduate from Florida A&M University (FAMU).

She currently has a book out called "Through The Fire Journal of a Child Star".  It's available on amazon.com.

The CBE has helped over 375,000 young people get in college and given away over $500,000 in scholarships. Founder summed up the whole event. "Our goal is to do all we can to make college a reality for more of our youth and guide them towards positive career choices."
