Sports Watching & Wondering

African American news from Pasadena - Sports - Sports Watching and Wondering commentary - how good can things getSometimes you just have to wonder how good things can get. UCLA and USC both won their games. The Dodgers and the Angels are both trying to get into the Playoffs. So, there are visions of championship trophies dancing in their heads of many of our local sports fans.

UCLA beat Rice. This will not go down as one of the Classics. However, it win is a win, and there haven't been too many of those around Westwood, lately. The Bruins did show some discipline and toughness, and that was a refreshing change.

On this coming Saturday, they will play the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the Rose Bowl. Make no mistake about it; the Huskers are very tough team. This Bruin winning streak is likely to begin and end with "1".

USC, as expected, had their way with the Warriors from the University of Hawaii. The Warriors were undermanned, and they were all a whelmed by the Trojans. However, to their credit, they kept their poise and they did not give up. They represent the greatest challenge that head Coach Norm Chow has had to face, so far. It took him 65 years to get a head coaching job, so it will be very interesting to see how his team does.

The Trojans will travel to Syracuse New York to face the Orange Men of Syracuse. Please let the record show that I am issuing my Upset Alert! They easily dominated the Warriors, and they have already begun to fantasize about BCS Championships and Heisman Trophies. They might be better advised to note that Syracuse senior quarterback Ryan Nassib completed 44 passes in their 42-41 loss to Northwestern. Also, the game will not be playing in the friendly confines of the Coliseum. Beware!

USC is continuing to heavily emphasize its passing attack. I get the feeling that the school feels that they owe the Heisman Trophy to Matt Barkley. However, it seems to me, that they are passing the ball when they might be better off if they ran it. I hope that Barkley does win this Award. He is a truly outstanding college quarterback, and he is a winner. However, he does not have a really strong arm, and he looks like a right-handed Matt Leinart. So, with those skills, he will most likely be the backup for the starter.

The Dodgers and the Angels must be wondering if there is something in the air or the water in Southern California. Both teams had reasonably talented rosters when the season began. Then the Dodgers added Shane Victorino and Adrian Gonzales. Things were looking good, but neither team has played as well as was expected. The management team of the Dodgers has opened their hearts and their wallets. Thier spending has exceeded anything that anyone could have reasonably expected. They have spent so much on this team, that it does not make sense to a poor person like myself. However, big money is almost always right, so I defer to their judgment.

The Angels are playing well right now, but they are on the verge of missing the Playoffs. A failure to do so, would likely end Mike Scioscia's long career as the team's manager. If you are Arte Moreno, the team's owner, and your payroll is $100 million more than the Oakland Athletics, you are not likely to be a happy person right now. He just has to feel that someone owes him an explanation.

It has just been reported that former Trojan football star, Joe McKnight, was given an old mobile while he was still playing for the team. USC quickly forwarded that information to the NCAA. The Trojans are still being punished for previous infractions. In the light of all the violations that have been reported at other schools, they just might get a break on this one. In my opinion the punishment for the Reggie Bush violation was far harsher than it should have been.
