Sports Watching and Wondering

African American news from Pasadena - Sports - Magic and LeBron, Odom, Bruins and Trojans, Dodgers and moreMAGIC & LeBRON - In response to a question, LeBron James is reported to have said that he thought that Michael Jordan, Dr. J., and Larry Bird were the three greatest players to ever perform in the NBA. Magic Johnson disagreed with his analysis, and said so in several Tweets. I am sure that James did not in any way want to show a lack of respect for Johnson. However, athletes and other personalities need to be aware that everything that they say is likely to be twisted and sensationalized. They also need to know that they are not required to to answer anyone's questions.

LAMAR ODOM - If the news reports are true, then Odom has some serious problems. The most consistent reports are that he is in a rehabilitation facility fighting drug addiction. I am sympathetic to people like Odom and Mike Tyson, because they essentially grew up without real families, and they did not get the love of the family, or the monumental idiocy to be a perfect match. They were trying to get him to eat healthy foods and have regular meals and not live on M & M candies. They did not have much of an education along the way. So, they did not have any preparation for the problems and opportunities that they would have to deal with later in life.

Lamar met Khloe, and they seemed to be a perfect match for each other. She was trying to get him to eat healthy foods, and to have regular meals. It seems that he had been living on M & M Candies, whenever he felt hungry. She tried to help him set up a regular schedule for his required athletic exercises. It seemed that he was on the road to a better life. One of the benefits of their being together was that Odom won the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award. I think that he was sincerely trying to live a better life, but that he has succumbed to those old habits that he knew so well. Neither the Lakers nor the Clippers seem interested in signing him to play for them next year. They were probably his last hope. His basketball career may be over, and this may be the cause of his depression and bizarre behavior. Lamar, it may help you to know that many, many of your fans are rooting for you, and hoping that you get your life back together.

UCLA - The Bruins are ready to roll. Jim Mora did the impossible last year by resurrecting a football program that was barely breathing. Now he has a team that is strong on both offense and defense. In addition, he has Brett Hunley, who has become one of the nations top quarterbacks.

The team will host Nevada at the Rose Bowl, Saturday night. The game will be on Pac-12 Networks, whatever that is. All I know about television for both the Bruins and Trojans is that I usually can't find the games, and I know many others who have the same problem. Something needs to be done about this, and eventually I guess it will. As much as it hurts to do so, I am picking the Bruins to defeat the Trojans this year.

USC - Lane Kiffin has not picked a starting quarterback. He says that both Max Wittek and Cody Kessler are Co-Starters. To me, this seems to be a bizarre approach to running a team. I do not think that USC is comfortable with Kiffin, because they do not understand him. His relationship with USC, in my opinion, can best be described as "awkward". I have heard that the primary responsibility of Pat Haden and J. K. McKay is to baby sit Kiffin, and thus prevent USC from being put on probation again.

The problem with that approach is that Kiffin is so different that neither of them can guess what he might do at any given time. Their brains are not wired the same way that his is, so they are unable to guess what he might do next. They just hope that they get warned early enough so that they can rush over and minimize the damage.

Former Trojan quarterbacks are not covering themselves with glory. Mark Sanchez got off to a good start, but his play the last two years has been horrible. He may lose his starting job, before this season is over. The list of unsuccessful quarterbacks includes Carson Palmer, Matt Leinert, and John David Booty. Matt Barkley is in his rookie year with the Philadelphia Eagles. I do not think that his prospects are better than any of his predecessors. He does not have a strong-arm, and he is not very athletic. So, it seems to me that he is doomed before he starts.

THE DODGERS - The team is rolling at an incredible pace. They have discovered that the joy of winning, and every member on the team is playing as hard as he can. Things were looking very bleak at Chavez Ravine. Then along came Puig, and he turned night into day. Now the team is absolutely certain of making the MLB Playoffs, and they are dreaming of getting into the World Series, and then winning it! Who would have thunk it?
