Sports Watching and Wondering

Black news from Pasadena - Sports - Phil Jackson and moreYOU COULD NOT MAKE THIS STUFF UP . . .

There is not a writer in Hollywood who would dare to write a script like this. Who would believe that Zen Master Phil, current President of the New York Knicks, would ever return to Staples Center? Not only is he coming back, but he will be accompanied by Jeanie Buss, who just happens to be one of the owners of the Los Angeles Lakers. They are coming to see the Tuesday night basketball game between the Knicks and the Lakers.

It is generally believed that Jeanie desperately wanted her brother Jim to rehire Phil to be the next Lakers head coach. However, he did not, and the reports are that the Zen Master was disappointed and furious. Jeanie publicly expressed her disappointment at her brother's lack of compassion. She knows that you do not "tug on Superman's cape, or disrespect the Zen MastBlack news from Pasadena - Sports - Phil Jackson and moreer."

Well, lo and behold, the Knicks stepped in and offered Jackson the job as President of the team, with a yearly salary of $12 million. Any way you look at it, that is a lot of Zen. Many of the local sports fans are wondering if Phil and Jeanie will enter Staples Center together. If so, will they be holding hands? Will they sit together, or will each sit with their respective teams? So many questions are left to be resolved. The problem for me is that my deadline is noon on Tuesday, and the game is on Tuesday night. Charlie Brown would say, "Rats!"

The game between these bottom feeders is not important, since both have losing records, and they are just finishing out the season. However, with the bad blood that exists between Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak and Phil, this game is a grudge match that is going to happen. It is regrettable that Kobe Bryant will not be able to play in this never to be forgotten match. Bryant admires Jackson, and the way that he would like to show him respect would be to drop 50 points on him. Then, after the game, they could hug.

You can believe that neither side wants to lose this game. If the Knicks win, the smug look on Jackson's face would be just too much to bear. If the Lakers somehow manage to win, then you can expect their fans to enthusiastically taunt the Zen Master. However, it goes down, you can expect that Jackson will remain calm and poised. When you are a Zen Master, you can handle anything. As I wrote in the beginning, you cannot make this stuff up, since no one would believe it.

UCLA - After an eternity, the Bruins are back in the Sweet 16 again. Congratulations. You will have to meet Florida this weekend, so we will leave a light in the window for you.

USC - Everyone knows that Athletic Director Pat Haden is the best Radio Broadcaster in the NCAA. However, please don't ask him how the basketball and football teams are doing. That would be mean.

The Raiders - Mark Davis is indicating that he might be interested in returning the team to Los Angeles. If it is necessary, we should be prepared to build a wall to prevent that from happening.
