Sports Watching & Wondering

College Football is Finally Here!

Black news from Pasadena - Sports - I do not know how to classify myself as a sports fan. I enjoy watching almost any sporting event. I was an athlete, when I was in the Army, and I know how much work and dedication athletes have to have. They are happy when they win, and miserable when they lose. That is just the way that it is

However, as much as I like to watch sports, I do not think about them much, unless I am actually watching something. I do not have any sports memorabilia, and I do not spend endless hours debating about who is exactly the best. Also, their personal lives are of little interest to me.

I will watch almost any sporting event, but college football is the sport that I love the most. I was a student at USC during some of their glory days. There are not many places like the Coliseum on a Saturday afternoon. The place is usually sold out, and stands look like a sea of Cardinal and Gold.

The Cheer Leaders will be urging the crowd to sing the USC Fight Song. They will also be working hard with their various, complicated dances and routines. Then, there is a mighty roar which indicates that Traveler, the USC Mascot, is prancing around the field. Trojans all over the world love that horse.

When I was a student there, watching the games was especially intriguing for me. I had met most of the players on the team, and had become friends with many of them. Most of the college athletes that I met seemed to be shy and somewhat socially insecure. Putting on that uniform gives them incredible confidence and pride. When they run out that tunnel and onto the grass at the Coliseum, they are completely different from who they are when they going to classes.

Also, from time to time, they will share their insecurities. I had an apartment in the same building as a star USC fullback. He seemed absolutely indestructible when he was on the field. However, he would tell me on almost a daily basis that he was having nightmares about his knees being injured. He would ask me not to mention it to anyone else, and I did not, until now. Although he had the nightmares, he did not have an actual injury, much to our relief.

Without any doubt, this is going to be an interesting year. UCLA went back to Virginia and brought home a win. It was not a pretty game and I think that they are a better team than they looked on Saturday.

USC looked like they were the champions of the world as they manhandled Fresno State. They do not have long to celebrate, since they have to travel up to Stanford this week. Regrettably, for the Trojans, they usually do not do well up on the Farm. In any case, I will be watching!
